Hoarding, clutter and hazardous living environments
Relatives, do these words remind you of the home of someone you care about? Service providers, do these words reflect the living environment of your clients or the state of the home to which they will be returning?
Your relative or client may be exhibiting signs of Diogenes syndrome. This is a behavioral disorder characterized by extreme self-neglect. It usually affects the elderly who live alone. Its symptoms include body odor and other signs of severe hygienic neglect. Physical diseases relating to bodily neglect usually accompany the syndrome. Diogenes syndrome usually manifests itself in association with compulsive hoarding, the pathological collection and storage of objects, mainly other people's refuse.
People cannot live in safety in their homes when the exits are obstructed and rooms are cluttered with rubbish, boxes, papers, bottles, hazardous electrical items, junk piled high and covering the floors. In fact to leave people living like this can amount to neglect.
If an item hasn’t been used, worn, looked at, referred to for more than a year or two it could be out of date, a safety hazard, a health hazard, a fire hazard, a mill-stone around the neck, and the accumulation of it all will be impacting on the quality of living.
Hazard and clutter free living is our philosophy.
